Six Reasons to Join PRSSA

Fall semester has begun and our campus is buzzing with new and familiar faces. Now that you feel refreshed from summer break, It’s time to put your best foot forward. Joining a campus organization can have a huge impact on the success of your semester, your college experience, and, ultimately, your future career.

Here are six reasons why the Public Relations Student Society of America at EMU is the organization for you!

1. Meet New People

PRSSA is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. With a diverse group of members, you are bound to find someone you have similar interests with. This group of peers knows exactly what you are going through and will be a great support system as you navigate your way through college.2Build Your Network

Not only will you be able to meet other students, you will have the opportunity to interact with professionals in the public relations, marketing, communications and journalism field. Whether you’re majoring in one of these areas or not, the relationships and knowledge you gain from these networking opportunities could help you gain a mentor who can aid in your navigation of the professional landscape. Who knows, maybe one of these professionals will be a key piece to landing your dream job. They always say, “It’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know!”

2. Participate in Events and Tours

Every year, PRSSA plans events and tours to sharpen your skills and build your network. Events like the Student Development Conference in December and Speed Mentoring in March are just two of many events that we offer to our members. We also plan agency tours, which give you a backstage pass to some of the most highly regarded agencies and firms in the Metro Detroit area.

3. Build Your Resume

Give your resume a huge boost by joining PRSSA. Because PRSSA is a national network of chapters, a large number of employers in top companies were once PRSSA members and are now PRSA members. When they see that you were a member of PRSSA on your resume you will have an instant connection, giving you a leg up on the competition.

4. Earn Scholarship Money

Student members are given the opportunity to apply for member-only scholarships to help manage their student loans. Who doesn’t want a little extra cash to pay for college?

5. All Majors Are Welcome

Although public relations is in our name, PRSSA is open to any and all students. A lot of our meetings are based on general professional development. We focus on subjects like how to get an internship, how to land an interview, how to write a cover letter and more!
